Since 2003, I have been retained as an external property and facilities adviser to Business in the Community, a charity which advises businesses on corporate social responsibility through a network of 850 company members. The organisation employs 350 staff and operates from 25 locations across the UK. Projects for Business in the Community include:
  • Re-design and Refurbishment of London Headquarters To develop and implement hot desking and flexible working practices to accommodate a work force that had outgrown the space available (185 staff in 11,000 sq ft) and to project manage the refurbishment of the building provided largely via pro-bono work and donations.

  • Headquarters Accommodation Project To find a headquarters building to accommodate 165 staff on the expiry of the client’s lease. I led a project to establish the client’s future requirements, review and cost all the options for a new building, which resulted in a decision to renew the existing lease. My lease negotiations with the landlords resulted in a 45% reduction in the rent, saving the client just under £1m over the term of the lease.

  • Cost Reduction Projects Conducted a purchasing review and identified opportunities for cost savings and reduction of environmental impact. I project manage a rolling programme of re-tendering office services and supplies contracts and introduced national purchasing contracts. Recent savings negotiated include a £25k cash refund on utilities and an £100k reduction in telephone costs.

  • Property Portfolio Management I manage the client’s property portfolio advising on property strategy, managing the disposal and acquisition of office leases, leading on landlord negotiations and project managing office moves.
